To Your Scattered Bodies Go [M1]

Post by Akh Uur Hoon » Thu Jul 27, 2023 5:08 am

D1. What Dustie task?: 1d8 2 - Funerary Rituals

This was one of Akh Uur Hoon's favourite assignments... seeing to it that the dead have a proper departure, in agreement with who they had been and what they had believed in at earlier stages of the great progression. At the same time, she couldn't be dispassionate about those who in her opinion had died too early, with contorted faces or fear forever printed into their pupils. They required more of her attention. Yet, she knew from experience second chances were worse than moving on from violent deaths, she just needed to convince the diseased this was the case.

This was also the time she could technically nourish; many dead were coming with loose parts that were hard to reattach even as Ei-Vene had usually done good preparatory work on them... but she rarely did so. Fresh bodies usually carried superficial stories anyway, it were old bones that were truly fascinating, if not particularly filling. Exploring their memories, however, could help prepare their funeral, so she resorted to that if a body was particularly non-descript.

D1. Funerary Rites. Lord of Life and Death Advantage. DC18.: 2d20k1+7 26

As in most cases, she performed her duties admirably.

[+3 Renown]

In between funerals, she'd seek out Dhall to ask him about the body of the scholar who had been murdered last night, and about other things.

The old Githzerai is sitting down as you approach him, continuing to write in the massive book before him as you approach him. For awhile, it seems that he is simply ignoring your approach, not looking up to meet you nor even acknowledge your presence before him. Finally, he stops writing, but still does not turn around. "Is there something I can help you with, Dead Hoon?"

"A man might have been brought in before this morning, Master Dhall." Speaking to him, Akh always showed respect. Her mentor was Githzerai, not Githyanki, and she'd learnt to appreciate the difference. "A murder victim called Rhaunades, an eminent scholar. I am on duty for conducting funerary rites today. I assume you would know where his body is stored."

Dhall doesn't move too quickly, as his old frame didn't allow him to be so as nimble as he once was. "Rhaunades..." he says it slowly, paging thru the book. "Yes...today...his remains are currently in the Embalming Room. No doubt they have not begun the process on him just yet..." He paused and finally turned around and looks at you with a little curiosity. "Was he a friend of your, Dead Hoon?"

"Yes and no, Master Dhall. You know I frequent the libraries of the city. I didn't know him too well but he was a dedicated scholar, one worthy of affinity and respect. I don't know the details of his departure but circumstances suggest he might have died defending something of academic value. Had he signed a Contract?"

"...not that I am aware of." Dhall nodded. "Most do not consider that their names may be written in the Dead-Book." He turns his back to the book, mostly disinterested. "The Harmonium wish to see if his mouth can be repaired in some manner so that they may cast Speak With Dead, while others are seeking a priest to bring him back to life." An audible frustration came from his mouth from the prospect.

"I'd like to avoid his revival as well. It will only diminish him. Perhaps I can learn enough my own way for the investigators to let him be."

Dhall nods his head approvingly of her statement. "You understand well, then. If there is something you wish to try, I am sure no one in here will complain if it succeeds, as it removes the Harmoniums off our back."

He returns back to writing once more, fully focused on his task.

She quietly placed Utadas' recommendation form next to Dhall for his discretion, and then directed her quiet steps to the embalming room, trying to avoid disturbing the pathways of zombies working there.

The undead ignore your presence, as per the agreement, and you make your way without incident to the embalming room. With nothing more than a quick surveying of the room , it takes you no time inside to figure out which of the corpses you seek, as there is only one of them that is completely charred.

The undead continue their work inside of the room as you approach the crispy wizard, and maybe what Dhall had told you would start to make sense as you get a good glimpse of the remains: his lower jaw had been completely removed from his mouth.

That was definitely not mentioned in the S.I.G.I.S. article.
